I grew up as a “Hodag” in Rhinelander, WI. Graduating in 2003, I came directly to UW-Madison, sure I was destined to be a doctor. After two unsatisfying years as a pre-med student, I decided to change my focus to art, with the intention of pursing a masters in architecture. In the summer of 2006, I was accepted into a summer architecture program at Columbia University in New York City. Sure that it would do wonders for my education and career, I took out a loan to cover the $2200 tuition (for only 3 credits), and flew to New York for six weeks. After the first day of the class, I realized that architecture was not for me, and I dropped out. I lost my housing in the dorms, and instead of going home, I decided to find a place to sublet for the rest of the summer and use my tuition refund to live on. It was the best decision of my life. I rented a studio apartment in the West Village, and saw the entire island of Manhattan. (To read more on my New York adventures, visit my blog at http://seabloom.wordpress.com)

Returning to Wisconsin was extremely difficult, but luckily in my first semester back I discovered an unrequited love for woodworking and furniture design. After the first project in my Intro to Woodworking class, I was hooked. I’ll graduate in 2008 with a degree in art, and I plan on taking the year off, moving back to New York, and then going to graduate school in Industrial Design and/or Furniture Design.

    Brittney,
What a talent you are! I don’t there has ever been anything you couldn’t do once you put your mind to it. I have always been impressed with your artistic talent (which you get from your mom’s side, by the way…). Remember when you were going to do a watercolor for me???
I love you and are proud of you and look forward to seeing you next month!

As we all well know, you get your beautiful artistic talent from my side of the family.

And in case you didn’t notice, if you rearrange the letters in your name it spells:

    “Be a NY artist; bloom.”

    :-)
